Don't Judge A Book By Its Zipper

As with most people in radio, I worked at several stations.  Iif you don’t job hop, you’re never going to make it.

I was working as an evening announcer in a small town when I suddenly found myself being asked if I was interested in the PD job. (The previous one was fired for flirting with our 17 year old intern on the air).
I said, “yes”, and the next week, I was the PD – of course with no training whatsoever.  Our radio station was corporately owned and the regional PD came in to help me interview for the opening of my old position. There were some excellent hopefuls we talked with.  That’s why I figured this one person never had a chance.  He came in with ketchup dripped on his shirt, and his pants were completely unzipped.  He must have seen us look, because he said, “Ya, I know… the zipper busted.  You have anything I can use to fix it?” The regional PD jokingly said he had some safety pins in his drawer.  To our surprise he asked if he could borrow them. He then walked out, went to the restroom, and when he returned, 3 safety pins were holding up his zipper.

After he left, the regional PD said, “I think we should hire him.”  I couldn’t believe what I heard, but in the end, he was hired.

I guess our regional PD must know his stuff…. Turned out this guy was the best announcer our station had.  He sounded good and people on the streets talked about him too.  I also became pretty good friends with him.

Radio is the only profession where rules for interviews and job etiquette just don’t apply… it’s great!
